LASU Student Sentenced to Prison For Raping Fellow Students

A student at Lagos State University has been  arrested and sentenced to prison for robbery and rape of two of his peers at the university.

According to sources, the convict, Afeez Ogunbowale, who has been suspended by LASU over this case reportedly committed the offence alongside others on April 18, 2018, at Okokomaiko area of Lagos.

On November 4, 2019, the two rape victims spoke in court about their sexual assaults. After being robbed of their smartphones, power banks, earphones, gold chains, and N1,200, victims stated they were able to identify the man who's in the same school as them via Facebook.

It was said that when the suspect was questioned at the police station, he confessed to the crime and even prostrated on the floor begging for mercy. However, he claimed that he was not involved in the incident, and he gave an alibi to the court. He claimed he was in school preparing for an upcoming examination which was to commence in May 2018.

Ogunbowale was found guilty of conspiracy, rape, and armed robbery, according to Justice Oluwatoyin Taiwo of Ikeja Special Offences Court who passed verdict on the case on June 29.

Taiwo held that the prosecution proved its case beyond a reasonable doubt and also remarked that the evidence of the victims was compelling.
