Professor Attahiru Muhammad Jega, the former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has urged Nigerians not to put their faith in the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on the promised reforms.
In a recent interview with BBC Hausa, he urged Nigerians to explore another option, stating that all those accused of being thieves and who will be punished for stealing under the PDP migrated to the APC and nothing happened to them.
Jega stated:
“Both the APC and the PDP have dominated the country, but from what we've seen, neither party is committed to reform. When it comes to the fight against corruption, all of the alleged thieves who were going to be punished because they stole under the PDP have now switched to the APC, and nothing has happened to them.
“As a result, we believe it is past time to establish a platform on which all good people may come together and contribute to the cause of change in Nigeria. As a result, I have already registered as a party member with the PRP to see how I can help Nigeria.”
According to the former INEC Chairman, "Even good Nigerians cannot impact change if they are members of the APC or the PDP." He also advised such people to join a different party and work towards saving the country.
Jega continued;
“Even if you are a nice person and cannot do anything because you are a member of their party, there should be another party that would gather good people together and work to save the country.
“I've been a university lecturer for 40 years, so what I read and saw during my time as INEC chairman, and the way our politicians act before and after winning elections, is disturbing. Fear is evident in the way they are governing the country.”
He also blamed the country's lack of good governance for the desire for national separation and secession.
