Today marks the 90th birthday of Grace Atinuke Oyelude, the first Miss Nigeria.
In 1957, Oyelude was crowned Miss Nigeria after defeating over 200 Nigerian girls in the competition.
Oyelude has previously stated that she became Miss Nigeria by chance.
Despite the fact that she was still residing in Kano, her brother, a broadcaster, saw the pageant advertisements in the newspaper and entered her without her knowledge in Lagos.
After winning the pageant, which came with a prize of 200 pounds and a two-week return trip to London, she was accepted into the school of nursing in Ashford, Kent, England. In 1961, she became a state-licensed nurse.
She graduated in 1962 as a state certified midwife SCM from the St. Thomas Hospital School of Midwifery in London.
In 1971, she received a Credential in Nursing and Hospital Administration from the Royal College of Nursing in England, and in 1976, she received another certificate from the Ghana Institute of Management and Personnel Administration.
Miss Nigerian organizers took to Instagram to wish her a happy 90th birthday.
