Democracy Day: Nigerian Government Declares Monday Public Holiday

The federal government has declared Monday, June 13 as a public holiday to celebrate Democracy Day 2022.

Rauf Aregbesola, the Minister of the Interior, acknowledged this in a statement on Thursday.

Aregbesola congratulated Nigerians on the commemoration of the annulled presidential election of June 12, 1993.

The Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida administration nullified the election, which was won by late business mogul M.K.O. Abiola.

Aregbesola asked Nigerians to back President Muhammadu Buhari's government in its efforts to bring the country together and flourish.

The minister urged them to consider Nigeria's path to democracy and the sacrifices made by patriots.

He encouraged Nigerians to strive toward maintaining the country's unity, stating that no growth can occur in a hostile atmosphere.

“With the challenges we face in Nigeria today, I see an opportunity for us not to break up or break down, but to break open.”

Argegbesola also urged people to appreciate, understand, and respect one another while living in peace.
