Seyi Makinde has officially declared his intention to run for president in the 2027 general election under the platform of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM).
The Oyo State governor made the announcement on Thursday during a political rally held at Mapo Hall in Ibadan amid growing political realignments ahead of the next election cycle. Supporters, party members, and political allies were present at the event, which also marked the unveiling of a new alliance between a faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the APM.
While addressing the crowd, Makinde publicly declared his ambition, saying:
“I, Oluseyi Abiodun Makinde, announce my candidacy for the position of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”
Before the declaration, Makinde reportedly led the Taminu Turaki-led PDP faction in signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the APM as part of preparations for the 2027 elections. The agreement was signed alongside APM National Chairman Yusuf Dantalle.
Under the new arrangement, candidates loyal to the PDP faction are expected to contest various elective positions — including governorship, Senate, House of Representatives, and State Assembly seats — using the APM platform instead of the PDP.
Political observers believe the move signals a broader opposition restructuring ahead of what is expected to be a highly competitive 2027 presidential election in Nigeria.
