TAMPAN has suspended Yomi Fabiyi following the release of his film "Oko Iyabo,"
which many say demeans a teen's sexual assault.
"TAMPAN suspends Yomi Fabiyi indefinitely for major professional misconducts and unethical acts," the Theater Arts and Motion Pictures Practitioners' Association said in a statement on Friday, July 9.
"Having listened to Mr. Yomi Fabiyi's extensive defense of the controversial film 'Oko Iyabo' and his Co-Director, Mr. Dele Matti, the Ethic, Conflict and Resolution Committee hereby finds them guilty of gross negligence and unethical behavior," the statement said in part.
The association also opposed the use of people's real names in the film's creation, stating that "no one is authorized to use genuine name(s) of other person(s) in a feature film" unless "the work of art is a "Cinema Verite."
The following is the rest of the statement: "As a result, it is professional misconduct to utilize a person's real name(s), story(s), or factual events without their agreement, as well as to discuss a narrative that is demeaning to that individual.
"Because the subject is already in court, the story, plot, theme, title, dialogue, names, and general content of the film ‘Oko Iyabo' is a factual presentation that may cause prejudice.
"His dishonesty and unscrupulous behaviors have harmed the image and character of our organization. His Co-Director, Mr. Dele Matti, has been suspended for three months after expressing regret and admitting his culpability."
TAMPAN also stated that the film's stars have been summoned to testify before the Ethic, Conflict, and Resolution Committee on July 24, 2021.
Following TAMPAN's statement, Yomi Fabiyi took to Instagram to invite individuals who were interested in seeing the film to contact him so that it can be sent to them confidentially.
